Gary was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, talking on the phone with his best friend while waiting for the right moment. As Jeffery passed a phone booth, Gary suddenly rushed out, put a handgun to Jeffery’s head, and fired a shot. Gary then slammed the phone receiver.
When asked, Gary cried and replied to the police, “If someone did that to my son, I would do it too!” The whole incident was recorded and broadcast live, attracting millions of views. Gary’s actions received support from many people after they heard that Jeffery had kidnapped and raped his son. The case was widely publicized as some questioned whether Gary should have been charged with murder. In the end, he avoided prison and was sentenced to seven years in prison, suspended for five years, and ordered to serve 300 hours of additional community service.
